Autism Spectrum in Children
Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, naturopathic care doesn't aim to 'cure' it, but the co-occurring medical issues that affect quality of life are often highly treatable.
Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental condition defined by differences in social communication and sensory processing. It is not a disease to be cured. But children on the autism spectrum have very high rates of co-occurring medical issues (gut problems, sleep disruption, immune dysregulation, nutritional deficiencies, anxiety) that are treatable, and that directly affect behaviour, learning, and quality of life when left unaddressed. I work with families to identify and treat the medical drivers that are making daily life harder, using a careful, individualized approach.
GI Problems Are Extremely Common
Up to 70% of autistic children have significant gastrointestinal issues (constipation, diarrhea, bloating, reflux) that often go untreated. GI pain and discomfort are major drivers of challenging behaviours in non-verbal and minimally verbal children.
Sleep Disruption Affects the Majority
50–80% of autistic children have significant sleep disturbances, often related to melatonin pathway dysregulation. Improving sleep produces some of the most meaningful improvements in daytime function and family quality of life.
Nutritional Deficiencies Are Near-Universal
Selective eating patterns mean most autistic children are deficient in multiple micronutrients (iron, zinc, vitamin D, omega-3s, magnesium) that directly affect brain function, mood, and immune health.

The idea that your gut and brain are connected isn't just folk wisdom; it's well-established science. The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication highway linking your digestive system to your central nervous system. When gut health suffers, mental health often follows. Understanding this connection opens up powerful treatment possibilities that conventional psychiatry rarely explores.

Digestive issues are among the most common reasons people seek naturopathic care, and for good reason. Bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and food sensitivities aren't just uncomfortable; they're signals that something deeper needs attention. A naturopathic approach focuses on finding and fixing the root cause rather than managing symptoms indefinitely.
